Как-то раз, сидя в «Обители Святого Делина» — трактире в самом центре Вивека, — я беседовал с Килией Тандо, дамой вдумчивой и деятельной, и она поведала мне увлекательную историю об одомашнивании никс-волов. Вварденфелл и пепельные земли Морровинда — родина самых разных уникальных созданий. Эти огромные насекомые исполняют в регионе множество ролей: служат вьючными животными для караванов, тягловой силой для вспашки полей и, конечно же, выносливыми скакунами.
Согласно хроникам домов темных эльфов, до прибытия с далеких берегов каймеров подобных созданий не существовало вовсе. Или, по крайней мере, они не обладали той исполинской мощью и размерами, что ныне. В вулканических землях своей новой родины, куда привел их почитаемый Велот, переселенцы не нашли ни зверей, ни птиц, ни тех благ, к которым привыкли на безмятежных Саммерсетских островах. Согласно преданиям, никс-волов даровала Пророку сама Боэтия — она преобразила крошечное насекомое в существо, способное нести ее избранных сыновей и дочерей к будущему, что она им уготовила.

I sat conversing with the dynamic and thoughtful Kylia Thando at the Abbey of Saint Delyn, an inn in the stony heart of Vivic City, as she related to me the fascinating history of the nix-ox and its domestication. Vvardenfell and the ashlands of Morrowind are a cauldron of unique creatures of all kinds, and this enormous insect plays a myriad of roles across the region: caravan beast of burden, plow-pulling farm laborer, and of course sturdy riding mount.
The history of the Dark Elf houses hold that these creatures did not exist prior to the Chimer's arrival from distant shores. Or at least, they did not exist at the prodigious size and strength they do now. The volcanic lands in which that culture found itself following revered Veloth to this new part of the world was lacking in all the beasts and birds and comforts they had known in the idyllic Summerset isles. Myth holds that the nix-oxen were a gift to the Prophet from Boethiah herself. The remaking of a tiny insect into a creature capable of carrying her favored daughters and sons into the future she saw for them all.
