Ничем не примечательные? Возможно. Привычные? Бесспорно. Но скучные? Отнюдь нет. Лошади окружают нас повсюду. Их используют в самых разных целях едва ли не все народы континента. От резвых скакунов до могучих тяжеловозов — эти животные так часто встречаются на улицах наших городов и поселений, что мы перестали их замечать. Но в чем причина? Как лошади получили такое распространение?
Ответ, как всегда, кроется в нашем меретическом прошлом. Когда в материковую часть Тамриэля прибыли недийцы из Атморы (о чем я подробно рассказываю в своем трактате), они привезли с собой выносливых лошадей, уже ставших неотъемлемой частью их культуры. Эти косматые животные были хорошо приспособлены к суровому климату той далекой земли. Следует отметить, что, согласно ряду исследований, популяция диких лошадей уже существовала и в самом Тамриэле, однако местные эльфы по неизвестным причинам не одомашнили их. И лишь спустя долгое время после расселения недийцев в эльфийских поселениях появились первые коневоды.
То, что на первый взгляд кажется странным упущением со стороны прозорливых эльфов, на деле объясняется особенностями их развитой культуры. Эльфы приручили таких существ, как гиппогрифы, олени и загадочные индрики, в столь глубокой древности, что сами уже не помнят, когда именно эти создания стали их спутниками. Кроме того, почти на всех уровнях альдмерского общества широко практиковалось изучение магии. Неудивительно, что народу, способному покорять волшебных существ и силой мысли перемещать землю и камни для строительства, обычные тягловые лошади были попросту не нужны.
А вот те, кто пришел с ледяного севера, видели в своих косматых скакунах спасение. Защиту от холода, источник молока и шкур, а также надежное средство передвижения и перевозки грузов на большие расстояния. Косматые северные кони и коренные тамриэльские лошади оказались полностью совместимы с точки зрения разведения (эта увлекательная тема достойна отдельного тома), и по мере расселения пришельцев по континенту во многих поселениях стали появляться лошади самого разного вида и назначения.
Эльфийские общины, особенно те, что не имели доступа к ресурсам крупных городов, быстро оценили этих «рабочих» животных. И ко времени появления йокуданской диаспоры лошади в материковом Тамриэле использовались уже повсеместно.

Common? Perhaps. Ubiquitous, yes. But boring? No, I say to you. The horse is everywhere, used in a myriad of applications and by essentially every culture on the continent. From sturdy riding mounts to draft horses, these beasts fill the streets of our towns and cities so thick as to pass without notice. But why? Why is the horse so common?
The answer lies, as ever, in our Merethic past. When the Nedes arrived on mainland Tamriel from Atmora (a subject I discuss at length in my treatise), they brought with them a sturdy stock of horses already well integrated into their culture. These shaggy beasts were well adapted to the cold climes of that distant continent, but it's worth noting that careful study has revealed there was already an indigenous population of horses on the mainland as well. Undomesticated, totally, by the Elvish cultures that lived across its length and breadth. It was not until well after the Nedes spread across the continent that we see evidence of horse husbandry in Elvish settlements.
What seems, at first glance, like a strange gap in Elvish ingenuity is in fact a function of well-developed cultural structures. Elves domesticated beasts like the hippogriff, the elk, and the esoteric indrik so far back in their distant past that they themselves have only a dim understanding of when those creatures became companion animals to their people. As well, we must consider the widespread acceptance of magical study at almost every level of Aldmer society. Alongside the benefits to taming whatever creature catches your cultural fancy, the ability to move earth and stone to construct buildings with the force of your will makes the common draft horse seem somewhat tame in comparison.
Whereas the peoples coming from the frozen north looked upon their shaggy steeds and saw salvation. Warmth from the cold, milk for the young, skins for armoring their hides, and of course sturdy transportation and cartage across vast distances. The shaggy steeds from the north and the indigenous horses of the mainland were wholly compatible from a breeder's perspective (a fascinating note worth exploring in a volume all its own), and we see evidence of form and function diversification in many settlements as the newly arrived people moved across the continent.
Elvish settlements, especially those without ready access to the resources of major cities, quickly adopted these beasts as "work horses." And by the time of the Yokudan diaspora horse usage across mainland Tamriel was well established.
