When the districts first appeared and opened their doors to Fargrave, the Pathfinders were among the first to leap into the fray and push against the borders of known and unknown. Today, they would be called a faction, but at the time they were merely brave, curious, and perhaps a touch greedy. Exemplars, in fact, of the factions which now oversee the Night Market.
While mortal adventurers may not know their story, they are likely familiar with their legacy. After all, the Pathfinders suffered the harshest lesson the districts had to offer and we have learned from it.
When the district doors first closed themselves off to Fargrave, it was sudden and without warning, and a group of Pathfinders were left on the other side of those doors. It was assumed that one day they would reopen and the explorers would be returned to us. We were only partially correct.
While the doors did reopen, the districts were different, and the Pathfinders were nowhere to be found. In all the time that has passed, districts have returned, but not that one. Not the one holding our kin trapped in a plane beyond our reach. And with each reopening, the districts grow familiar and less varied. We may never see that Fetid Maw again.
But that is not to say we will suffer the same consequences should anyone else be left behind.
The pact magic which binds you to a faction, also acts as a tether to our plane. In the event of a sudden closure, your faction leader can pull at the strings which bind your will to theirs, and foist you back into Fargrave.
Do not view your pledge as an admission of subservience, but rather a safety measure to ensure you are not lost to the seething chaos of the districts.
It is a gift in memory of the Pathfinders.
