On Shackled Titans

By Pelagius Habor, Council Daedrologist-in-Residence

I have written before on the difficulties of the Daedrologist's chosen field of study. All too often, a great discovery comes at the cost of the Daedrologist's life. Who knows what awesome truths have been gained in some perilous summoning, only to be lost a moment later when the subject of observation escapes its containment? One in my field can never be too cautious!

To that effect, I now take quill in hand to set down what I have learned about the so-called "Shackled Titans" found among the legions of Molag Bal. That, of course, is not their Daedric name, but that is how they are commonly known. Shackled Titans are formidable beasts, armed with the fiery breath of a true Daedric Titan and rending claws. They are sometimes encountered as battle-mounts for Molag Bal's favored servants.

Some Worm Cult scholars believe that the Shackled Titan is, in fact, a Titan shorn of its wings and condemned to a bestial form in punishment for some failing. My own investigations suggest otherwise. Shackled Titans are fairly numerous among Coldharbour's legions, while true Titans are thankfully rare. Are we to believe that Molag Bal has such an excess of these mighty Daedra that he can afford to mutilate and diminish them in such numbers? Or that so many Titans fail in the tasks the Lord of Brutality appoints to them? It defies reason.

No, I feel confident that the Shackled Titan is instead the primordial stock from which Daedric Titans arise. These creatures were the first forms Molag Bal bred in mockery of Dragons. Most demonstrate no further room for improvement. But the largest, fiercest, and most cunning of these creatures can then be grown into true Daedric Titans. I suspect that process involves steeping them in the energies of Molag Bal's realm, feeding them on his malicious power, cutting away what holds them back. But that is a topic for another day.

As for the stories of Titans being shorn of their wings: I would not be surprised if Molag Bal did indeed punish a few Daedric Titans by casting them back into the forms from which they came, giving rise to the common misconception. But all of them? I doubt it!
