Interesting. Sea Elves well known for their mutual relationship with these creatures. Scales too small for a full-grown beast. Perhaps a crecheling. So, immature beasts that do not make it to adulthood still prove useful to the clans that rear them.

That seems spot on. Detailed examination of the interior showed it once held several types of messages. Parchment, leather, I even found a type of powdered stone. I’ve heard of cultures using chiseled stone rods to carry shorthand letters, but I had no idea Sea Elf navies used them as well.
